Boudoir Myths Busted

by Rachel Gaetz

There exists a few assumptions about boudoir photography. And unfortunately, these assumptions may prevent many women from participating in this amazing experience. For my next trick, I'd like to debunk five of the most common myths and ease your worries if you find yourself intrigued, yet hesitant, about booking your own boudoir session.

Myth 1: I have to strip down/wear lingerie

It doesn’t matter if you’re wearing lingerie, a blanket with sleeves, or nothing at all. The main purpose of boudoir photography is to empower the subject, not to make them uncomfortable. There is only one person who dictates how far you need to go with your shoot and that person is you. I communicate extensively with my clients prior to their shoot so that I have a thorough understanding of the vision you have for your shoot as well as your comfort level.

Myth 2: I am not perfect

Um... ain't no one perfect! We could criticize and pick ourselves apart all day and have nothing to gain from it except wasted time. Who you are in this very moment is exactly who you should be as you begin this journey. I’ve photographed every age, size, shape, color, etc., and the results are always gorgeous. There are too many things in this life that we choose not to experience because we think don’t match society's beauty standards. A boudoir session is a beautifully rebellious way to toss those ridiculous standards out the window and to embrace yourself as you are.

Myth 3: I will be judged for it.

Truth is, certain people will be judgey about ANYTHING. And it's usually rooted in their own insecurities, not your actions or your character. When it comes to something so incredibly personal (like our bodies!) there are bound to be feelings of vulnerability and the fear of being judged. It is not for anyone but you to decide what makes you feel empowered, comfortable, and beautiful. I’m there as a facilitator, and to capture your essence via the art of photography. My very imperfect self does not judge. Besides, nobody will see these photographs unless you choose to share them. They can be your little secret or your public declaration of self-love... your body, your choice.

Myth 4: Everybody will see my photographs.

As my client, YOU decide what I can use for promotional purposes. After your shoot is over, YOU will receive a private gallery and you decide if choose if there are any photographs you are willing to let me use for my portfolio/promotional use. If you decide you do NOT want your photographs posted online then this is completely fine too. They are your pictures to do with as you see fit. I shoot a lot of my promo work with willing models for this reason!

Myth 5: I don’t have someone (a partner/ significant other) to do this for.

Yes, you do! These photographs are a gift for the best person of all...YOU above all else. Sure, sometimes people have these sessions done so that they can give their partner a gift he/she will never forget. And, of course, that’s a wonderful idea. However, first and foremost, a boudoir photo session is a gift to YOU! It's a way to remember, celebrate and honor your beauty and bravery.

And this is a truth, not a myth...so many clients say they wish they had done this for themselves sooner!

If you're feeling like, YES! 2023 is the year I'm doing it... I have an opportunity coming up! Mini sessions will be held in Minneapolis on 3/5. You can sign up here or contact me for more information!
